The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is dedicated to educating the public about brain injury, as well as providing the latest information and resources to professionals, medical providers, caregivers, survivors and families.

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey serves as a centralized source of education for medical professionals and individuals working or aspiring to work in the field of brain injury. The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey also offers educational programs to people with brain injury, family members, and the general public.

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey's educational offerings include conferences, workshops and trainings and a brain injury certification program.

Brain Injury Basics for Families

Brain Injury Basics for Families is a FREE educational presentation offered by the Brain Injury Alliance throughout New Jersey, in a different county each month. At Brain Injury Basics, attendees will learn about the impact of brain injury on families.

This FREE Presentation Will:

  • Provide an overview of brain injury (including definitions and the rate of incidence),
  • provide information on the effects of brain injury on families (including the stages of grief family members experience),
  • provide information about the common consequences of brain injury: cognitive, physical, and emotional,
  • provide information about strategies families can utilize and tips for caregivers,
  • and, provide information on resources available through the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey and NJ state agencies.

Adjustment to Brain Injury

Brain Injury happens in an instant. It affects a family for a lifetime. At these sessions you will find information that will help you and your family learn how to adjust to living with a brain injury.

This FREE Presentation Will:

  • Provide an overview of the changes that occur after brain injury,
  • provide information about how people with brain injury and family members adjust to living with a brain injury,
  • provide information about grieving and coping following brain injury,
  • and, provide information about choices for coping and empowerment.

Annual Seminar

Every year, the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey holds two all-day seminars on select topics of relevance for professionals who are working with people with brain injuries. These seminars are open to staff working in state government, non-profits, schools and any other organization that might benefit from information about brain injury issues, and are held in both northern and southern regions of the state. The seminars are sponsored through the New Jersey Traumatic Brain Injury Fund, and are free of charge. The specific topic of these seminar changes every year; past years’ topics have included:

  • Brain Injury and Substance Abuse: A Dangerous Mix
  • Understanding Brain Injury: A Focus on Veterans
  • Changes in Personality and Behavior after Brain Injury

Online Course for School Professionals

This FREE course, created by the Children & Adolescents Committee of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, is intended for general and special education teachers, school psychologists, educational consultants, social workers, guidance counselors, principals, speech and language pathologists and other professionals who work with students with brain injuries.

Educators will gain an increased awareness and understanding of students with brain injuries and their families. With an increase in the identification of students with brain injuries in schools, educators become vital resources for students, colleagues and families. This course will help educators understand the unique characteristics that make this a challenging and interesting population.

Successful completion of the course provides educators with 10 professional development hours.

Sessions for Parents & School Professionals

The Alliance’s Children & Adolescents Committee creates several education opportunities for parents and school professionals to learn more about the unique issues faced by school-aged children and adolescents who have sustained brain injuries.

Regional Training Seminars

Every spring, the Alliance holds full-day regional trainings on brain injury for health & human service workers in the northern, central & southern regions of the state.

These seminars are designed to:

  • Provide an overview of brain injury, including definition, symptoms, and prevalence in New Jersey and nationally.
  • Identify appropriate state funded programs and services.

Brain Injury Traveling Workshops

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey provides free educational opportunities for all people affected by brain injury, including family and friends, and training opportunities for the professionals who support them. Have our staff train you at your facility; the following Training Workshops are available.

Introduction to Brain Injury

Participants will learn the basic facts about the brain and brain injury, including the causes and consequences of brain injury, living with a brain injury and its effects, and how professionals can assist people with brain injury and their family members.

Brain Injury Basics

Participants will learn about what brain injury is; the incidence of brain injury; the common effects of brain injury; strategies family members can use; tips for caregivers; and resources available to families through the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey.

Brain Injury in Students

Participants will be provided an overview of brain injury, brain injury in the school system, effects of brain injury, accommodations & strategies to assist students, and programs and services of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey.

Substance Abuse & Brain Injury

Participants will learn about the basics of brain injury, the incidence of substance abuse in those affected by brain injury, and how to adapt your substance abuse program for people with brain injury.

Bancroft’s “Heads-Up” Brain Injury Seminar Series:
Self-Advocacy for People with Brain Injuries

For persons with acquired brain injuries, the ability to advocate for themselves is an important component of rehabilitation, and a key to long-term positive outcomes. By playing a role in decisions that affect them, survivors of brain injury are empowered to take charge of their lives.
