Trooper Scales Memorial Award

Trooper Christopher S. Scales

Trooper Christopher S. Scales was a front-line partner in the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey’s brain injury prevention efforts. Trooper Scales was struck and killed on December 3, 2002 while conducting a seatbelt enforcement detail on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey honored State Trooper Christopher Scales posthumously in May 2003 by introducing the Trooper Christopher Scales Memorial Award. This award is presented each year to a member of the law enforcement community who has demonstrated exemplary efforts in promoting public safety and brain injury prevention.

2011 Recipient

Sergeant Joseph B. Markulic

The Trooper Christopher Scales Memorial Award is presented to a member of the law enforcement community who has demonstrated exemplary efforts in promoting public safety and brain injury prevention. The 2011 recipient is Sergeant Joseph B. Markulic, Supervisor of the Howell Township Police Department. His work in public safety and brain injury prevention includes an Annual Safety Day that provides safety information for bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians and motorists. Under his leadership the traffic unit increased the number of child passenger safety technicians and conducts numerous safety seat inspections at various sites in Howell Township. Sgt. Markulicalso utilizes the Alliance's Think Positive Helmet Safety Reward Program and won the department a traffic safety enforcement award with his "Three Strikes and You're Out" enforcement campaign. He is the President of the Monmouth County Traffic Officer's Association, the liaison for the Monmouth County Intoxicated Driver Resource Center and serves on the Monmouth County Intoxicated Driving Committee. Sgt. Markulic continuously demonstrates and perpetuates support and care for his community by educating, encouraging and conducting programs that promote safety and endorse brain injury prevention.

Nominations for the Mimi Goldman, Trooper Scales Awards and Jill Schulman Community Pillar Award should be received by April 1, as these awards are presented at our Annual Seminar in May. Nominations for each of our Annual Awards should be received by September 1, as these awards are presented at our Annual Meeting in October.
