“A Legacy of Hope:  Celebrating Survivors and Their Stories”

2025 Honorees

Lisa Gonzalez

9-Year Survivor

In 2015, Lisa Gonzalez had two strokes which resulted in aphasia, a communication disorder that affects one’s ability to speak, read, write, and understand language.

As a consequence of the aphasia, Lisa didn’t speak for a year.  She became depressed and knew she had to do something about it.  She checked herself into a hospital and received the treatment she needed to move forward in her life.  Once on the right path, she had the drive to participate in any program that could help her get her speech and life back.  She became involved with multiple programs, including the Brain Injury Alliance of NJ, which have all been an integral part of her recovery.

Lisa now lives an independent life and has most of her words back.  She credits her recovery to her ability to persevere and never give up.

Lisa Gonzalez is 61years old and lives in Bloomfield, NJ.
